What is "Kochikukai?"

Kochikukai is an official Shakuhachi Club of Waseda University. The Shakuhachi, otherwise known as the bamboo flute is a bamboo end-blown flute which was originally introduced from China during the early Edo period.

At Kochikukai, we play from Hon-kyoku (traditional solo music), San-kyoku (ensemble music with the Japanese harp and Shamisen), Gendai-kyoku (post-Meiji period music, more modern and influenced strongly by Western music) and modern popular music (such as Pop, Jazz, Rock, Country).

Not only do we simply practice the Shakuhachi, but we also hold two regular recitals (usually during June and December), and participate in other activities on and off-campus.
